I also believe that this is the conflict of the story because all of Pecola’s conflicts amount to this resolution, and she changed the way that she perceives herself permanently. He saw opportunity in Pecola, and had her kill the dog. What Pecola didn’t know is that Soaphead poisoned the meat, and was planning on killing the dog himself. She left, thinking that she had blue eyes. She did as he asked, and the begin to act very strange, and then succumb. If the dog acted strange afterwards, she would have blue eyes. He said that she would gain blue eyes if she gave a piece of meat to the dog outside. Soaphead initially said that he could not help her, but then decided to trick her. She went to Soaphead and asked for blue eyes. The protagonist Pecola sought out the help of a former reverend whom was given the name “Soaphead Church”. This book opens up a conversation about beauty standards and the “beauty myth.” It is a book that will make you see the world and people in a different light.The conflict of Morrison’s “the Bluest Eye” was resolved in an interesting way. My heart hurt as I followed Pecola’s journey and all the hardships and cruelty she was forced to face just because of the color of her skin. She is already beautiful, but she doesn’t see herself that way. Pecola is trying to reach for a certain beauty standard the entire book, even though we as readers know that it is unobtainable. It is as though everyone takes out their racial insecurities on her even though they should be banding together and defying social standards. The hierarchy puts those who are black but not as dark as others higher in the racial hierarchy. I think the most interesting and controversial part of the book is that it often talks about racism within the black community. She is insecure about her dark complexion, and is constantly reminded by others that she does not fit the standard of beauty that society has created. The book centers around a young black girl Pecola who wishes for blue eyes. It does contain sensitive material, but the message portrayed is crucial. In my opinion, this is a book that everyone should read at some point in their life. I enjoyed this book and appreciated the conflicts in society that it addresses. My class just finished reading The Bluest Eye, by Toni Morrison. It is especially interesting to read books and short stories that contain subject matters that women were not allowed to speak of, nevertheless write about. I was so excited to finally read works that are often thrown under the rug, especially during the time they were written. The first class I knew I wanted to schedule was ENGL 194 known as Women Writers. They didn’t have uninterrupted moments to be intellectual and creative. Women were housewives and lived their lives taking care of their husband and children. It isn’t a secret that men succeeded in the writing world before women. I wanted to read books that were written by women. One thing I noticed in high school is that the writers we read were predominantly white men. I loved exploring the pages of a book and seeing how what was written could be interpreted and have a multitude of meanings. My mind challenged itself to find meaning and rhetoric in the classic works I was currently reading. I started to spend time annotating and writing analytical papers on books that I read. High school AP Literature class is what first introduced me to books on a larger scale. For most of my life, I chose fun or interesting books and didn’t think much about it. As you already know, I have been reading books for pleasure ever since I first learned to read.
